Begin and grow your humanities career with Strathmore University School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Our academic and executive education programmes are well thought out and addresses the specific needs of the industry.

Strathmore University Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Ethics is designed to produce ‘thought leaders’ of ethical theories and practices who view individuals and organizations as upright ethical agents who positively influence a sustainable, ethical, social-economic development of society. The graduates of the Programme will have the capability to advance theory, knowledge, and skills applicable to applied ethics in research, science, medicine, military, management, and other social sciences in general. To foster continuous learning and ethical engagement with relevant social issues, graduates of the Programme will be members of the school’s alumni association. Graduates will be expected to have a clear understanding and support the attainment of relevant United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The educational philosophy of the program is that active learning requires the candidates to be involved in their learning actively. This not only involves doing research in all subjects and their thesis but applying the learnings to their professional life, as they study each subject.

The philosophical background of the subjects follows the traditional, perennial philosophy stretching from the classical Greek philosophers, and more specifically, Aristotle, following through the Medieval philosophy, more specifically the contribution of Aquinas, and modern and contemporary philosophy who advanced the content and method of the previous philosophers.

In ethics, the studies will follow a unified theory that includes the contributions of Aristotle, the epicureans, the stoics, virtuous ethics and deontological ethics, which properly understood are not exclusive, but inclusive.

Regarding the method of study, it will combine the philosophical research methods, which are mainly deductive from established principles, and sociological, in studying how those principles apply to the specific circumstances the candidates work on.
