Why study Master of Science in Education Management (MSc.EM)

Since 2002 The Institute of Humanities, Education and Development Studies (IHEDS), now the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, has run a number of teacher training courses in educational management. These courses were developed into a one week educational management programme for secondary school principals. This formed the backdrop for the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Management (PGDEM). The PGDEM was intended to prepare schoolteachers with substantial classroom experience, to develop management skills. The course attracted individuals who had a previous background in education and others (without this background) involved in the management of schools.

Due to its success shown through positive school and community transformations, not withstanding individual positive change, many participants have expressed the desire to actualize the diploma to the Master’s level. In addition, many stakeholders have expressed the need to form educational managers. A critical issue facing many educational institutions, and shown through tracer studies conducted by governmental and non-governmental organizations like USAID, is the death of management skills in educational institutions.

The Master’s in Educational Management is intended to provide a very strong foundation in educational research which is both theoretical and practical and at the same time, provide other course units relevant for the successful management of schools and other educational institutions. The target group is educational managers.
